Lake Malawi Safari '05'

Before meeting up with the Safari members I got two dives in at Namalenje Island. I was staying in Senga Bay village which is only 2 km from this Island.

South East side of Namaleje Island, house size boulders Cichlids are easily observed right from the boat.

The Lake was calm and the water was fairly clear, not always the case at this location. Sponges which filter the water here are a common sight. Nile Monitors are often spotted in and out of the water.

At this location you can now find Metriclima callainos a recent introduction. The best looking "Red Empress" comes from this Island. Often called Red Empress "boadzulu island".

"The name has nothing to do with "Boadzulu Island" in the south-east arm of the lake but its common name has stuck - as simple as that! "(personal com. Stuart Grant)
